Livonian Cup stays in Estonia

Valmiera FC played the second pre-season match in Tallinn, this time around it was a battle for the Livonian Cup against Estonian champions FC Flora. Following a penalty kick and a red card things were clear – this time the home side would triumph with a score of 2:0.

The early step of the match heralded good news – football will be exciting. Both teams were not shy to go forward. The events on the pitch were dictated by the Valmiera FC team, which already had two excellent chances to score goals in the first five minutes of the match, but were unsuccessful. In the 16th minute, another dangerous raid, when Kristians Kauselis broke through to the goal alone, this time the opponent’s goalkeeper worked more successfully to grant a save.

In the 21st minute of the game, Klavs Lauva made a save for the first time, and was able to catch the ball after an opponent hit from a very close distance. Right after that, due to our own mistake, another opportunity for the home team – a shot in the upper corner of the goal, but our goalkeeper did an excellent job there as well. The result was revealed in the 32nd minute when Daniels Balodis tripped an opponent in his own penalty area, therefore an 11-meter penalty kick was awarded, which was also capitalized upon. In the frenzy of half-time, we were trailing 0:1.

For the second half, Jurgis Kalns made several substitutions, with Davis Veisbuks, Emils Birka, Jekabs Laguns, and Niks Sliede coming on the pitch. The beginning of the second half was already a little more cautious for both teams, however, with the help of pressing, the home team forced their game, so they had an advantage in the beginning – a lot of work for both luck and Veisbuks, who just recently had stepped out to play.

In the 55th minute, Djibril Gueye sent the ball into the goal, seemingly making it 1-1, but the goal was disallowed due to an off-side. Moments later Meissa Diop met the goalkeeper on the counterattack, this time luck was on the opponent’s side as well. Dangerously, our attacks followed each other, in the 67th minute, Alvis Jaunzems kicked hard, but again the goalkeeper played safely.

An unexpected turn in the game – Maksims Tonisevs received a red card after the opponent’s contact with the surface of the pitch, leaving the team a man down. In the continuation, the players of FC Flora gained solid control of the ball, creating attacks that were quite threatening. Veisbuks worked brilliantly several times in the goal, however, in the 87th minute, a completely free opponent received a cross pass, and hit the ball into the goal, achieving 0:2, which was also the final result of the game.

Our starting 11 vs FC Flora: Klāvs Lauva, Daniels Balodis, Roberts Veips, Pape Yare Fall, Maksims Tonisevs, Ivan Zhelizko, Djibril Gueye, Alvis Jaunzems, Renars Varslavans, Meissa Diop, Kristians Kauselis.

The players involved in the game from the bench: Davis Veisbuks, Niks Sliede, Jekabs Laguns, Emils Birka, Kristers Neilands, Niks Dusalijevs, Ingars Pulis.

Flora won the third consecutive Livonian Cup

In the Livonian Cup held on 29 January in the EJL Hall, the Green Whites lifted the winning trophy over their heads as the reigning Latvian champion FC Valmiera was defeated by a score of 2:0.

Valmiera started the encounter with a high level of pressure and so pressed herself into flora's penalty area. In the first quarter of an hour, opponents earned several good kicks that, fortunately for the Green Whites, finished in the distance. Flora got her momentum from the 16th minute when Valmiera sneaked into the pitch and the deflections in front of goal created dangerous situations.

In the 22nd minute, Rauno Alliku attempted a shot, but the goalkeeper was in position and Flora was not allowed to score. A minute later, Martin Miller attempted a shot from near the penalty area, resulting in the bar shaking instead of the goal net.

After half an hour, Sten Reinkort was fouled in the opponents' penalty area and Flora earned a penalty. Sergey Zenjov, who went on to realize the penalty, pressed the ball to the left side of the post and left the goalkeeper with nothing but a shrug of his shoulders. Tabloid 1:0.

Flora started the second half dangerously, showing that opportunities were being sought and the next goal was being chased. An opportunity was offered to Ken Kallas, who deflected the leather ball between the goalkeeper's gloves with his head after the penalty kick. Alliku, whose attack ended with the ball rolling past the goal from centimeters away, was also unsuccessful.

Valmiera was constantly breathing in Flora's back and finding ways to scare the Green Whites. In the 56th minute, the ball reached the net as a result of a ricochet. The referee disallowed it, but Valmiera firmly showed that the Latvians should not be written off yet and vigilance must be maintained. A moment later, a long-range shot was bang and faced flora goalkeeper Ingmar Krister Paplavskis in a one-on-one situation, where the latter prevailed. The cage lock was also solid in the 67th minute when he fended off Valmiera's shot.

Flora came back and resumed creating opportunities midway through the second half. Nikita Mikhailov was left a few centimeters off scoring the goal and on the second consecutive occasion the ball was greeted by a goalpost instead of the net. The post was again found in the 85th minute by Erko Jonne Breedjas, whose desire to secure success failed.

However, the lead was doubled a minute later when Danil Kuraksin's feed squeezed through for goal and Mikhailov curled the ball into goal. So Flora had gone into the final minutes of the match with a 2-0 lead that could be maintained until the final whistle.

The referee had declared the game over and the Green Whites were able to lift the Livonian Cup over their heads. It was Flora's third consecutive Livonian Cup victory, having previously brought home the trophy in 2011 and 2018.
