Rocketing energy bills are forcing Hungary to shutter libraries, theatres, swimming pools and even its new football stadiums for winter.

Its new 14,000-capacity city-run stadium also pulled down its shutters this month to save costs, said mayor Andras Cser-Palkovics. Cser-Palkovics said the plan is for the stadium, only built in 2018, to reopen in mid-January, adding that he has asked the league to reschedule evening games in the New Year to save on pitch heating and floodlight costs.

Local side Fehervar FC, which usually trains at the stadium during the winter, can use other pitches in the city. "Fehervar FC's professional work is not particularly affected by the drastic decision to save energy," the club said.

A club record crowd of 6,951 watched Brighton’s women lose 3-1 to Tottenham at the 32,000-seater Amex in October, but that still fell well short of the 10,000 attendance needed to prevent fixtures from running at a loss.

Brighton’s reservations about using the main stadium more frequently for the women go deeper, believing they deserve better than a venue built with the men in mind.

The home dressing room, for example, has a large, open shower area and only two toilet cubicles, while drinks outlets for fans are geared towards heavy consumption of beer (more than 21,000 pints per match last season). Brighton will work with architects to ensure that design features at the new stadium are more women-friendly and family-friendly.

But it’s also an opportune moment to celebrate the fact there are still so many clubs playing in the heart of London. Twenty-five years ago, this seemed unlikely.

Around the turn of the century, when several clubs were moving out of their old stadiums, the trend across the country was to abandon central parts of towns and cities, and head for greenfield sites on the outskirts. Suitable land was more likely to be available and was considerably cheaper.

In London, it was a different story. In an alternative history of London football in recent years, Arsenal are playing outside the M25, Chelsea are in Battersea, Tottenham are up in Enfield and Brentford are in Kingston. Somehow, that has not happened.

Considering London is the most populated city in western Europe (according to official city boundaries) and finding land for housing is an issue, never mind for much larger developments like a football stadium, this is a remarkable circumstance that shouldn’t be taken for granted. A couple of decades ago, we once expected London clubs to do what Atletico Madrid have done: flee the centre for the suburbs. None have.
