“Yes, Manchester United didn’t send their first team to Astana at the time but we had a full stadium of 30,000 people and Kazakhstan lived off that for almost a year,” he says. “It promoted football within the country, that result and everything around the game associated with playing the biggest club in the world. Kazakhs are quite superstitious and when it came to the draw they all thought we’d get an English club just because of me being there. Then Man United came up and it was crazy.
“We played AZ Alkmaar and Partizan Belgrade in the group stages as well. When I went over to Manchester I took the Kazah president of the club and a couple of the directors and we went three days early because it’s the trip of a lifetime. I took them to watch Rochdale against Lincoln, I said to them, ‘Let’s go and see proper English football’. They were amazed at how high the standard was, that was League One, they were amazed at the crowd and the stadium and the atmosphere. Then I took them to Liverpool Football Club museum, then we had the pre-match dinner with Ed Woodward at Old Trafford. I wanted them to have the full experience of English football from a Kazakh point of view.”
